Orfeo Group sings Kolvenbach’s Love Song at Charlestown Working Theater

Orfeo Group is thrilled to be back on the boards this summer at a new (and, ahem, air- conditioned!) venue. Despite the change of locale, one thing remains the same: the Group’s commitment to high quality theatre at low-or-no cost to audiences. Tickets for Friday-Sunday performances are $20. Thanks to the generosity of local donors, Thursday nights mark the return of the “OR-FREE-O” show and tickets are completely free of charge. Free tickets will be distributed on a first-come-first-served basis. Those who wish to secure Thursday tickets ahead of time can purchase online for $10.

Beane is alone, an exile from life. His sister Joan and brother-in-law Harry try to reach him but keep coming up short. Following a burglary at Beane’s apartment, Joan is baffled to find her brother blissfully happy and tries to unravel the mystery behind his new love, Molly. An ode to the possibilities of love, John Kolvenbach’s comedy celebrates the (re)emergence of love in (un)likely places and (un)expected ways.

Orfeo Group Artistic Director Risher Reddick directs Love Song, which features a quartet of Orfeo Group founders and favorites: Daniel Berger-Jones (Harry), Liz Hayes (Joan), Gabriel Kuttner (Beane) and Georgia Lyman (Molly). All four actors are members of Actors’ Equity Association and Love Song marks Orfeo Group’s first full AEA production. Orfeo Group is the recipient of two Elliot Norton Awards for Outstanding Fringe Production: Look Back in Anger (2009 — starring Berger-Jones, Hayes, Lyman & Reddick and directed by Kuttner) and The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) (WOWSA) (2010 — starring Berger-Jones, Kuttner & Reddick and produced by Lyman and founding company member Caleb Jon Magoon).

Playwright John Kolvenbach is the author of on an average day, Gizmo Love, The Gravity of Means and Fabuloso. His plays have received productions at the Comedy Theatre in London’s West End, Steppenwolf Theatre Company, MCC Theater in New York, Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater and Merrimack Repertory Theatre.

The design team includes previous Orfeo Group collaborators Cristina Todesco (scenic), Katherine O’Neill (costumes) and Peter Bayne (sound) with Orfeo newcomer Jennifer Rock (lighting). Ryan Anderson is the Production Stage Manager and Victoria S. Coady is Producer.

Orfeo Group is also proud to announce extension programming surrounding their production of Love Song, as they did with the Community Bard-B-Q and nightly Preludes by local companies and artists during the 2010 production of WOWSA. In addition to a cash bar available before and after every performance, Friday night is “Date Night” with love-themed treats, and Saturday night is “Saturday Surprise” with special goodies for the audience. Sunday matinees will feature a post-show picnic, and featured performances will be followed by “Upstairs at the Firehouse,” showcases of work by other companies and friends of Orfeo Group. Hopelandic Theatre Company brings their new dance theatre piece Into the Fog to the upstairs space on August 18, 19 & 21 at 10 p.m. Please note, the “Upstairs at the Firehouse” performances are not handicap accessible.

GREAT WATERS MUSIC FESTIVAL WOLFEBORO

Great Waters Music Festival Presents
Big Bad Voodoo Daddy
Friday July 15th at 8:00pm

Fun, genius, musicianship with a little mischief thrown in – these are just a few of the words to describe Big Bad Voodoo Daddy “America’s favorite little big band” presented by the Great Waters Music Festival at 8:00 pm on Friday, July 15, 2011 at the Kingswood Arts Center. Their “How Big Can You Get? A Tribute to Cab Calloway” evening captures the essence of an American icon by bringing a jolt of winning, feel-good energy exactly the way that Calloway’s music did in Depression-era America.

The band founded in Ventura, California by lead vocal, guitarist, songwriter and bandleader Scotty Morris concentrates on the swing of the 1940’s and 50’s. Kurt Sodergran on drums and percussion is the other original member of the band. Scotty and Kurt are joined on stage by Andy Rowley – saxophone and vocals, Dirk Shumaker – string bass and vocals, Joshua Levy – piano and arranger, Glen “the Kid” Marhevka – trumpet and Karl Hunter – alto, tenor saxophone and clarinet.

The band has had a multi-platinum seventeen year career since they arrived on the music scene in 1993 at the legendary Los Angeles’ Brown Derby nightclub. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy (BBVD) carries on the tradition of the big bands and orchestras like Glen Miller, Benny Goodman and Count Basie with their contemporary swing sound. This seven-man group has forged a massively successful fusion of classic American sounds from jazz, swing, Dixieland and big-band music and has built their own songbook of original dance tunes. Their music has appeared in over sixty movies and television shows and they have sold out shows at the Hollywood Bowl, Walt Disney Hall, Lincoln Center, Chastain Park and Constitution Hall. They were special guests with the US Air Force Orchestra, appeared on the 1999 Super Bowl half time show, the Capitol One Bowl in 2006 as well as the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night with Conan O’Brian, Live with Regis and Kelly and Dancing With the Stars.

One Night Only!
Sunday July 31st at 8pm

Cambridge, Mass.— OBERON, the American Repertory Theater’s destination for theater and nightlife on the fringe of Harvard Square, is bringing exciting and original programming to the space in 2011. The home of the A.R.T.’s hit productions of The Donkey Show, Cabaret and Prometheus Bound, OBERON also presents the work of local and visiting talent. WHAT: Lea DeLaria, one of the stars of the A.R.T.’s Prometheus Bound, has distinguished herself in every form of entertainment that she touches: jazz musician, Broadway diva, actor, writer and stand-up comic. Countless concerts, movies, stand up specials and 4 Warner Brothers records later she is ready to present this fantastic evening. DeLaria gave you the acclaimed reinventions of “The Ballad of Sweeney Todd” and Blondie’s “Call Me,” and now brings a brand new look at one of pop music’s most enduring singer songwriters, David Bowie.

MORE ON KENNY LOGGINS
Kenny Loggins has been many things to many people over the past three decades — “a moving target” as he’s put it. In his time, Loggins has been a guitar-slinger with a psychedelic rock band, a hot young songwriter with a publishing deal, half of a legendary country-rock duo, a massively successful and accomplished solo artist, a sonic pioneer in the smooth jazz genre, a reigning soundtrack superstar, a rocker, a seeker, as well as an enduring recording artist and live performer whose most recent works have spoken deeply to both young audiences and decidedly adult and worldly concerns. At the heart of it all, there remains a brilliant singer-songwriter and guitarist with a lifelong passion for exploring the endless power of the song to communicate. By any standard, Loggins’ commercial impact has been extraordinary; twelve of his albums have gone platinum and beyond. In a world of one-hit wonders and fifteen-minute sensations, Kenny Loggins has enjoyed hit songs in four straight decades.

MORE ON RICKY SKAGGS AND KENTUCKY THUNDER
A life full of music. That’s the story of Ricky Skaggs. By age twenty-one, he was already considered a “recognized master” of one of America’s most demanding art forms, but his career took him in other directions, catapulting him to popularity and success in the mainstream of country music. His life’s path has taken him to various musical genres, from where it all began in bluegrass music, to striking out on new musical journeys, while still leaving his musical roots intact. 2011 marks the 52nd year since Ricky struck his first chords on a mandolin, and this fourteen-time Grammy Award winner continues to do his part to lead the recent roots revival in music. With 10 consecutive Grammy-nominated classics behind him, all from his own Skaggs Family Records label (Bluegrass Rules! in 1998, Ancient Tones in 1999, both Soldier of the Cross and Big Mon: The Songs of Bill Monroe in 2003, Brand New Strings in 2005, Instrumentals in 2007, Salt of the Earth with The Whites in 2008, and Honoring the Fathers of Bluegrass: Tribute to 1946 and 1947 in 2009), bluegrass music continues to be in good hands, with the masterful Skaggs at the helm. Click here to listen to Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder’s recording of “Dawg’s Breath” from their album Instrumentals: Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder.

(BOSTON) – Boston University School of Theatre in association with the Huntington Theatre Company brings

the internationally acclaimed Propeller Theatre Company to Boston for the first time to perform

Shakespeare’s Richard III and The Comedy of Errors in ambitious rotating repertory. An all-male cast of

fourteen actors takes on over 40 roles in the two boisterous productions. Propeller is currently on an

international tour that includes only three U.S. cities; Boston is the final U.S. stop.

“There is far more to Propeller than boys in high heels,” remarks The Independent. The U.K.-based Propeller

mounts muscular and testosterone-fueled productions of Shakespeare’s works unique for their dynamic

physicality, imaginative theatricality, and a modern flair – all while honoring the original text. The multi-

talented actors infuse the productions with music and live sound as they sing and play musical instruments

throughout.

In Richard III, Shakespeare’s most villainous king embarks on a fiendishly entertaining and diabolic adventure

to scheme and murder his way to the throne. Propeller’s production, set in a gothic Victorian hospital, features

evocative, bloody imagery in the style of Grand Guignol. Recommended for ages 12 and up.

Set “south of the border,” The Comedy of Errors tells the story of two sets of identical twins that were

separated at birth and reunite 25 years later with hilarious consequences. Mistaken identities, assumed

personas, slapstick physical comedy, and a mariachi band make The Comedy of Errors a fun-filled family

experience. Recommended for ages 12 and up.

“Shakespeare challenges every preconceived notion about people, about morality, about what it is to be

human,” says Hall. “Our culture and society, mainly led by the media, demands that we make instant judgments

about everything. Shakespeare reminds you not to get caught up in that vortex.”

Propeller has previously toured Shakespeare’s Henry V internationally and the hugely acclaimed Rose Rage

(Henry VI, Parts I, II, and III) across the U.K. and to Chicago and New York, among other productions. The

company is led by Artistic Director Edward Hall, son of acclaimed British theatre director Sir Peter Hall, who

returns to the Huntington having previously staged the U.S. premiere of local author Richard N. Goodwin’s hit

play Two Men of Florence.

“Ed’s production of Two Men of Florence was a monumental experience my first season, and I am delighted now

to bring his dynamic company to Boston,” says Huntington Artistic Director Peter DuBois. “Propeller’s actors are

incomparably talented – they hit the darkest notes of the drama and the antic shenanigans of the comedy.

Boston audiences will want to make sure they see both of these productions to fully appreciate the scope of

Propeller’s theatrical skill.”

Edward Hall (director) is the artistic director of Propeller Theatre Company and Hampstead Theatre. His

productions of The Merchant of Venice and A Midsummer Night’s Dream are currently touring the U.K. prior to

a world tour including New York and Tokyo. His production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream played in London

in 2003, and New York’s Brooklyn Academy of Music in 2004 (Drama Desk Award nominations for Best Director

and Best Production). His production of Rose Rage (an adaptation of Henry VI parts I, II, and III) played in

London (Olivier Award nomination) before touring the U.K. and the world, including Chicago Shakespeare

Theatre in 2003 (Jefferson Awards for Best Play, Director, and Ensemble) and the Duke Theatre in New York. Mr.

Hall’s other theatre credits include The Deep Blue Sea (Vaudeville Theatre); The Taming of the Shrew (OBIE

Award) and Twelfth Night (The Old Vic and world tour, Drama Desk Award nomination in New York); Once in

a Lifetime, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (Olivier Award nomination), and Edmond with

Kenneth Branagh (all for the National Theatre); A Streetcar Named Desire with Natasha Richardson and John C.

Reilly (Roundabout Theatre Company); Macbeth with Sean Bean and Samantha Bond (Albery Theatre); and

Julius Caesar, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, The Comedy of Errors, and Henry V (all for Royal Shakespeare

Company). He has also directed for television.

Propeller Theatre Company members featured in the two productions include Tony Bell, Kelsey Brookfield,

Dugald Bruce-Lockhart, Wayne Cater, Richard Clothier, John Dougall, Richard Frame, Robert Hands, Chris

Myles, David Newman, Thomas Padden, Sam Swainsbury, Dominic Tighe, and Jon Trenchard.

PRODUCTION ARTISTS

The creative team for Richard III and The Comedy of Errors includes costume and production design by

Michael Pavelka (Rose Rage), lighting design by Ben Ormerod (Beautiful Burnout at National Theatre of

Scotland), composition and sound design by David Gregory (Wages of Thin at the Old Red Lion), music by
