BUZZ: What a bargain. 90 minutes of laughter for 420.Stephen Flaherty’s (Music) and Lynn Ahrens’ (Lyrics)
celebration of the impossible complications of love and lust
in a 16th Century travelling troupe of self-obsessed actors who are completely
infatuated with their own talents and any standing ovations they can marshal. These masked comedic geniuses are the creators of a lineage of icons
that include Lucille Ball, Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin.

They are overly dramatic megalomaniacs and emotional gymnasts.

They fall madly in love.
They elope.
They purchase impotent love elixirs.
They navigate the choppy waters of backstage.
They infuriate the French King.

They go without money.
They go without food.
They go without connubial bliss.
They go without conjugal euphoria.

What they won’t go without is applause.

This one-act musical opened to rave reviews on Broadway at
Lincoln Center’s Mitzi Newhouse Theatre on October 11, 2007.

The partnership began last season, and attendance has increased steadily. The presentation is paired with a casual reception for guests and artists.

ABOUT THE OPERA:William Shakespeare’s magical play and Benjamin Britten’s luminous and witty score combine to question love, loyalty and reality in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. It is also a featured performance of OPERA America’s 2011 conference, which BLO is co-hosting. The opera follows the challenges and misadventures of a group of hormonally charged young lovers and a band of amateur actors, as they weave in and out of each other’s dreams and consciousness’s in a magical night forest filled with fairies. Together, the imaginative visual world and luminous, witty score will immerse the characters and audience in a continually shifting dreamscape, in which all are infected with Britten’s mysterious spell…a dream? Or a seductive nightmare?

Hair

APRIL 2011

BRILLIANT ARTS and ENTERTAINMENT

It’s April! The sights and sounds of spring are finally upon us. I, for one, could not be happier. It was a brutal winter. Coming from Canada, this winter was a reminder of all frigid things past. I guess that is why I have a special affinity for lilacs, daffodils and spring.

For the one or two people in the world whom that I did not tell, I was a musical theatre actress in Montreal many moons ago where I had the lead in “Plain and Fancy.” My musical director…the fabulous Galt McDermott. I wonder whether that time was as memorable for the composer of Hair, Galt McDermott as it was for me. Check out this iconic musical coming to Boston this April as well as the other hot suggestions.

WHAT: HAIR
WHERE: COLONIAL THEATRE
WHEN: THROUGH APRIL 10
TICKETS: www.broadwayacrossamerica.com/boston OR 800-982-2787
BUZZ: The Public Theater’s new Tony-winning production of HAIR is the most electric celebration on Broadway! This exuberant musical about a group of young Americans searching for peace and love in a turbulent time has struck a resonant chord with audiences young and old. HAIR features an extraordinary cast and dozens of unforgettable songs, including “Aquarius,” “Let the Sun Shine In,” “Good Morning, Starshine” and “Easy To Be Hard.” Its relevance is UNDENIABLE. Its energy is UNBRIDLED. Its truth is UNWAVERING. It’s HAIR, and IT’S TIME. While many find this show suitable for young adults (13 and older), parental discretion is advised. There is a dimly lit 20-second scene with nudity that is non-sexual in nature.
